Este partido se presentaba con buena pinta con un Athletic que tras la ultima victoria ante el Levante y la posterior semana de descanso, que desde luego falta hacia a los Rojiblancos para hacer borrón y cuenta nueva. Ya desde el principio del partido se vio a dos equipos que les gusta el ataque y que no pensaban encerrarse, así pues ya en el minuto 10 el Villareal marcaba su primer gol, aunque el Athletic no se arrugo y minutos mas tarde y en una jugada similar Etxebe pone un buen centro que Ezquerro remacha, aunque una vez mas la alegría no duró mucho puesto que en un corner muy bien sacado José Mari de perfecto cabezazo puso el 2-1. Ya en la segunda parte Valverde fue a por el partido y comenzó con dos cambios sacando a Urzaiz y a Del Horno, y la verdad que daba sensación de que el Athletic podía ir a por el partido pero en un rápido contraataque Forlan se encargó de poner el definitivo 3-1, a partir de ahí el partido no fue tal con un Athletic hundido y un Villareal que no vio peligrar el marcador que incluso pudo ampliar. Con esta derrota la UEFA se pone muy cara mas que nada viendo lo fundido que se encuentra el equipo, aunque sin duda un buen partido ante la Real Sociedad el próximo sábado podría ser un bálsamo perfecto para recobrar la esperanza.
